Picturing America February Winner

February's "New Moon" calendar brought in a record number of entries. We had some great responses to our posters of Romare Bearden's "The Dove" and Gilbert Stuart's portrait of George Washington.

January Picturing America Winner

We displayed two different posters in January.

For the first one, the sculpture Ladder for Booker T. Washington, we asked "What kind of things or ideas can climbing a ladder symbolize? If you had to climb this ladder, what would you hope would be at the top."

Two answers that stood out were:

December Picturing America Winner entry

In December, for one of our questions we asked, "In what way can a quilt tell a story?"

One creative entrant changed this question around a bit to answer "In what way can you quilt a story?"

The response was - "Take an obscene amount of polaroids and glue them to an 8' x 11' piece of cloth - if glue doesn't work - go to Walgreens and get a sized down version printed on a shirt and profit."

This year, our library was awarded a grant through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) called "Picturing America." Through this grant, the library received 20 two-sided posters of American artwork that the NEH felt captures our nation's heritage. About every two weeks, a new poster is put on display and we'll be continuing to display them through Spring of next year.
